Pink and Chocolate

Due early May: Hot for Chocolate by Blue Hill Fabrics - a celebration of the Pink and Chocolate fabrics popular in the 1870's. Created by renown quilt maker Betsy Chutchian these pretty antique prints are something very new for us and reflect the growth in interest in vintage fabrics inspired by the V&A's 'Quilt' exhibition.
Why did Pink and Chocolate become so popular?
Traditionally the colour Chocolate Brown was used by widows who had passed out of the stage of mourning when they could only wear black. Following the American Civil War this literally left hundreds of thousands of American woman wearing 'Mourning Brown', this was soon enlivened by the new Pinks and Reds spreading across the Atlantic from India via Europe.
Pink and Chocolate fabric very quickly spread around the Victorian world - one of the world's first global fashion trends!
